Removal of the commuter benefit would impact almost all commuters in our region, whether they take transit or drive. Transit riders would lose the ability to put pre‐tax dollars toward their fares, and drivers parking in employer‐provided parking could see that parking assigned a value that becomes taxed as part of an employee’s compensation. This change might result in an increase in accounting requirements for suburban and urban employers providing parking. Additionally, eliminating the transit benefit could create more congestion in our region, and contribute to a decline in air quality.
